Closet Essentials: Shoes

As a stylist one of the first things I do when I meet a new client is take inventory of their current wardrobe and help them put together as many outfits as I can using existing pieces. Sometimes they are missing essentials that every woman should have in their closet. In addition to sneakers, sandals and the usual suspects in your closet I will take you through what I feel are essential shoes that every woman should own.

  1. Classic Pumps

Every woman should own a classic pair of pumps. I suggest something in black, as well as a neutral like nude. A round or pointed toe pump with a sensible heel is a classic shoe that will always be in style and appropriate for work. A higher pointed to pump will look chic paired with distressed boyfriend jeans or skinny jeans for a more casual look.

2. Flats

Flats are a girl’s best friend! They are easy to walk in and a pair well with a variety of outfits. I suggest getting, a black and neutral pair such as a tan or nude. Also an embellished flat can really can add a feminine touch to any outfit!

3. Tall Boots

Having at least one pair of tall boots is an absolute necessity, especially if you live in a region that encounters  colder weather in Autumn. The perfect pair of boots can look so chic paired with dresses, skirts, pants or jeans. One tip I recommend is trying the boots on in person. The shaft diameter can vary so much between styles and designers. Also if you plan on wearing riding boots with your jeans tucked into your boots you should wear that pair to the department store so you can get an accurate feel of how the boots will fit. There are many styles of boots out there and it is a personal preference on which style you choose. For the past few seasons riding boots are really popular for a more casual look as well as the over the knee suede boots paired with jeans. Right now I’m loving a tall leather boot with a stacked heel. They pair wonderfully with skirts and dresses. The one important factor about boots to consider  is the price, a great pair of boots will set you back at least $500 if not higher, but a well crafted classic style that is properly cared for can last several years…so think of it as an investment!

4. Peep Toe Pumps

Honestly, peep toe pumps are probably my favorite style when it comes to heels. Peep toes are perfect for flashing a glimpse of that gorgeous pedicure. They are very versatile and look great paired with dresses, skirts and even pants. I suggest having two pairs of these beauties in your closet, one black and a neutral such as nude. Bonus points for combining peep toe and slingback style together!

5. Dress Sandals

While you may already have casual sandals in your closet, one shoe that gets overlooked the most is a dress sandal. How many times have you needed to scramble at the last minute shopping for a pair of shoes to pair for special event? As a stylist I have experienced it more than a few times. You buy a new dress for a party at work or a wedding and don’t have a single shoe in your closet.  Having a classic dress sandal hiding in your closet can come in handy! I suggest finding a minimalist  style that will pair well with different looks. A black or metallic strappy sandal would be perfect. I would avoid anything too trendy as you will probably only wear these heels four to five times a year.

6. Statement Heels

Statement heels aren’t actually a necessity, but they sure are fun! Having that one pair of heels in your closet to break out for drinks with the girls or date night can add a bit of whimsy to your life and make you smile. Important tip about statement heels: Keep the outfit simple and let the heels doing the talking!
